Inhaling with the Ellipta
Powder inhaler suitable for children from 12 years old
Your doctor has determined that you have problems with your airways. For this, you are given medications in powder form, called Relvar. This powder is in a special device, the Ellipta. The medications ensure that your complaints are reduced, disappear or are prevented. Here is everything the nurse told you, so you can read it again at home.
What are the benefits of inhaling medications?
By inhaling the medications, they go directly to where they need to be, namely in your airways. They work faster as a result. Another advantage is that very little of the medication is needed to get a good result. This means you have less chance of side effects. To keep feeling as good as possible, good inhalation is very important.
Prepare before first use
The Ellipta is packaged in a tray with a bag of desiccant. This bag can be thrown away with the rest of the packaging. The device is now ready for use.
Instructions for use:
- Keep the Ellipta still (do not shake).
- Only open the cap when you want to use the medication.
- Slide the cap aside until you hear a ‘click’.
- The dose counter will count down and indicate one dose less. If the dose counter does not count down when the cap ‘clicks’, the inhaler does not deliver the required dosage. Then contact the pharmacy.
- The medicine is now ready for use.
- Sit upright or preferably stand, with your head slightly back. Your mouth must be empty.
- Breathe out completely. Be careful, do not blow into the inhaler (the Ellipta will then become moist and the powder will stick).
- Bring the Ellipta horizontally to the mouth.
- Place the mouthpiece between your teeth, close your lips around it and let your tongue lie at the bottom of your mouth. Make sure you
- Don’t block the air openings of the device with your fingers.
- Breathe in once long, evenly and deeply.
- Take the Ellipta out of your mouth and hold your breath with your mouth closed for ten seconds, so that the powder can settle in the lungs.
- Breathe out calmly through your nose. If you use the inhaler correctly, you will not taste or feel anything from the medicine.
- If you doubt whether you have inhaled the medicine powerfully enough, repeat points 7 to 12.
- Close the Ellipta by sliding the cap up.
- If your doctor has prescribed a second dose, repeat the above steps.
- After you have inhaled the Relvar, rinse your mouth and throat. Spit out the first sip and swallow the second sip. This prevents fungal infections in your mouth or hoarseness.
Your tooth enamel is temporarily softened by the medicine and is therefore easily damaged by brushing your teeth. Therefore, wait at least half an hour after inhaling to brush your teeth.
