Lumigan (generic name: bimatoprost ophthalmic) reduces pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid filtering into the eye. Bimatoprost ophthalmic is used to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Lumigan RC® contains benzalkonium at a composition of 0.005% (0.05 mg/mL) in Lumigan® and 0.02% (0.2 mg/mL) in similar markets.
General:
This medicine contains the active ingredient bimatoprost.
Bimatoprost belongs to the prostaglandin analogs. These medicines promote the drainage of fluid from the eyeball and thus lower the pressure in the eyeball. They are used alone or together with other drops, called beta-blockers, which also provide pressure relief.
Your doctor may prescribe this medicine for the treatment of glaucoma (an eye disease caused by too high pressure in the eye).
Bimatoprost can darken the iris (the colored part of the eye), the eyelid, and the eyelashes. This is due, among other things, to the increase in the amount of brown pigment in the iris. This discoloration occurs mainly in people with ‘mixed’ color eyes. These are, for example, blue/brown, gray/brown, green/brown, or yellow/brown eyes. In people with completely blue, gray, green, or brown eyes, this discoloration hardly occurs. The number of eyelashes can also increase and the eyelashes can become thicker.
Uses:
Usually, one drop is used in the eye once a day. An optimal effect is achieved when this eye drop is administered in the evening. Read our tips for properly administering eye drops. It is important to press the tear ducts closed after instilling in the eye. Therefore, close your eyes after instilling, and press at the corners of the eyes with your thumb and index finger against the inside of the nose. This prevents this medicine from being absorbed into the bloodstream.
After opening, you may store and use the bottle for a maximum of four weeks below 25° C. After use, close the bottle well and keep it out of the reach of children.
After instilling these eye drops, you must wait at least five minutes before you may administer other eye drops to the eye.
Never interrupt your treatment without asking your (eye) doctor for advice.
Caution with:
People with disturbed respiratory function and/or severe heart failure should be careful when using these eye drops.
This medicine can discolor the iris (the colored part of the eye), the eyelid, and the eyelashes. This is partly because the amount of brown pigment in the iris increases. This discoloration mainly occurs in people with ‘mixed’ color eyes. These are, for example, blue/brown, gray/brown, green/brown, or yellow/brown eyes. In people with completely blue, gray, green, or brown eyes, this discoloration hardly occurs. The number of eyelashes can also increase and the eyelashes can become thicker.
This medicine can also cause eye irritation, itchy, dry or red eyes, and eye pain.
You may become more sensitive to light, your blood pressure may slightly increase, you may get a headache, and your liver may give disturbed values in a blood test.
Administering the drops can cause temporary blurred vision. Be careful with driving and operating machinery.
