Elidel (generic name: pimecrolimus) is used to reduce skin inflammation caused by the type of eczema called atopic dermatitis. It is usually prescribed for people who have not responded to other eczema medications such as topical steroids, or who are allergic to steroids.
It may also be prescribed to treat the condition known as vitiligo, where areas of the skin lose their natural color as a result of an autoimmune process that destroys the melanin-producing cells.
It works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals called cytokines, produced by white blood cells as part of the body’s immune response to allergy or irritation. Cytokines are part of a cascade of events in the skin that results in the irritated area becoming inflamed – red, swollen and itchy. Elidel stops the white blood cells in the skin from producing cytokines and so reduces inflammation. Learn more about dermatitis and eczema here.
