Ventolin® (both called salbutamol and albuterol) works by relaxing the muscles in the airways to allow breathing. It is used to treat bronchospasm (wheezing or shortness of breath), which can be used with reversible obstructive airway diseases, including asthma.
- The active ingredient in ventolin is salbutamol.
- Ventolin belongs to the short-acting bronchodilators.
- The drug relaxes the muscles in the lungs and reduces shortness of breath.
- Doctors prescribe ventolin for lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD.
- You can administer it with an inhaler, diskus or nebulizer.
- In a severe asthma attack, you may administer ventolin by injection.
- You can get side effects, such as headaches and an accelerated heart rate.
What is Ventolin?
The active ingredient in ventolin is salbutamol. It temporarily widens the airways so you can breathe easier. This is called a short-acting bronchodilator. Ventolin relaxes the muscles in the small airway passages. It causes the airways to dilate, making it easier for you to breathe. Ventolin relieves chest tightness and reduces coughing and wheezing. Doctors prescribe the drug for children and adults with severe shortness of breath due to:
- Asthma
Asthma is a chronic condition of the lungs. Your lungs constantly remain slightly inflamed. The lungs are sensitive to stimuli and get irritated easily. During an asthma attack, the airways become narrower, making it difficult for you to breathe. You can use ventolin to keep the airways open. This allows you to breathe more easily. - COPD
COPD is a collective term for diseases of the lungs. The lungs are damaged, making it difficult for you to breathe. Common symptoms are shortness of breath, coughing and shortness of breath. Ventolin reduces narrowing of the airways, allowing you to breathe more easily. Shortness of breath symptoms decrease.
